Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
General Queries
1. Iām an adult with no formal training. Can I join your classes? Will I be learning with young kids?
Absolutely! You are more than welcome to join as a beginner. We currently have a separate batch for new learners, and as my classes continue to grow, additional sessions will be added. Keep an eye on my website for the latest updates on class schedules.
2. What is a good age to start learning Kathak? Can my 2-year-old join the classes?
The minimum age to join my Kathak classes is 6 years and above. I believe that children should have a basic understanding of numbers and the ability to focus for a structured learning experience. Starting too early can sometimes lead to a lack of sustained interest, which may not support the goal of nurturing a true passion for dance.
3. How many years does it take to learn Kathak?
Learning Indian classical arts is a lifelong journey with endless depth and discovery. The time required depends on your dedication and passion. To reach a professional level, at least a decade of training is recommended. Curriculum-wise, it takes approximately seven years to complete the Visharad (diploma) level.
4. I have been learning Kathak for more than three years. Do I still need to start with the beginner level?
Not at all! We offer separate batches for beginners, intermediate, and advanced-level students. Your placement will depend on your experience and skill level. More classes will be added to the schedule soon.
5. I want to take an examination for my Kathak training. Do you have an accredited center?
Yes, we have an accredited examination center recognized by Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh.
6. Is there an option for in-person classes?
Yes! In-person Kathak classes are available in Appleton, Wisconsin at M-Effect Studio. Learn more here.

8. Do I need prior experience in dance to join your classes?
No prior experience is needed! My classes are designed for all levels, from complete beginners to advanced dancers. You will be placed in the appropriate batch based on your experience and comfort level.
9. What should I wear for Kathak classes? Do I need ghungroos (bells) as a beginner?
Comfortable Indian attire like a salwar-kameez, churidar-kurta, or a long skirt with a fitted top is ideal. Beginners do not need ghungroos initially, but as you progress, you will require them for practice.
10. How do I progress through levels in your Kathak classes?
Progression depends on your practice, consistency, and grasp of techniques. We follow a structured curriculum, and as you advance, you will be moved to intermediate and advanced levels.
11. Can I take a trial class before committing?
Trial classes are not available at the moment, but you can attend a single paid session to experience the class before enrolling for a full month.
12. What if I miss a class? Will I get a makeup session or recording?
If you miss a class for personal reasons, a Zoom recording will be provided for you to catch up. However, if I am unavailable, the class will be rescheduled at no extra cost.
Online Videos are only available for online and hybrid students.
Fees & Payments
13. Are four classes a month enough to learn Kathak?
Due to busy schedules, students often struggle to commit to more than four classes a month. Having gaps between sessions allows for dedicated practice time and creates a sustainable learning routine. If you need additional guidance, online classes are available.
14. Do you offer any discounts for long-term enrollments?
